What it’s like

Established in 1860, Howell’s School occupies a commanding 11-acre site in the cathedral village of Llandaff, a suburb of Cardiff. The splendid mid-Victorian Gothic building has been enlarged and adapted; facilities now include a Great Hall, drama studio, recording studios, technology centre, indoor swimming pool, sports complex and 5 ICT suites. There is a sixth-form centre with ample facilities for study, leisure and teaching. The junior school is currently being expanded to accommodate more pupils. Pastoral care is well-structured, through the tutorial and house systems. Academic standards are high and examination results very good. It is very strong in music and drama. There is a wide range of games and sports in which high standards are achieved, with national and county representatives in many of them. Extra-curricular activities are encouraged. There are work experience and work shadowing programmes, in the UK, France and Germany.

Pupils & entrance

Pupils: Total age range 3–18; 734 day girls. Senior department 11–18, 536 girls.
Entrance: Main entry ages 3, 4, 11 and 16. Own entrance exam used; for sixth-form entry, 5 GCSEs at least grade C (grade B in sixth-form subjects). No special skills or religious requirements. State school entry 60% main senior intake.

Scholarships, bursaries & extras
Approx 2 pa academic scholarships, value up to 50% fees (1 each at 11 and 16). 15+ bursaries at 11, and others for current pupils if parents suffer financial difficulty. Text books, examination entries etc included in fees.

Head & staff

Headmistress: Mrs Jane Fitz, in post from 1991. Educated at Launceston High School, Tasmania, and at universities of Tasmania (biological sciences) and London (chemistry). Previously Headmistress at Notting Hill High, Second Mistress and Head of Chemistry at South Hampstead High, and Head of Chemistry at Bromley High.
Teaching staff: 53 full time, 17 part time. Annual turnover 10%.

Exam results

GCSE: In 2003, 81 pupils in Year 11, 98% gained at least grade C in 8+ subjects. Average GCSE score 62 (over 5 years).
A-levels: 74 in Year 13: 95% passed in 3 subjects. Average final point score achieved by upper sixth formers 362.

University & college entrance
96% of 2003 sixth-form leavers went on to a degree course (24% after a gap year), 8% to Oxbridge. 18% took courses in the arts, 30% in medicine, pharmacy, science & engineering, 12% in law, 18% in business studies, 20% in other subjects eg IT, physiotherapy, performing arts, music.

Curriculum
GCSE, AS and A-levels. 18 AS and A-level subjects. Integrated PSE programme; peer-led drug education.
Sixth form: Most sixth formers take 4 subjects at AS-level, 3 at A-level; general studies is not taken. 33+% take science A-levels; 33% arts/humanities; 33% both.
Vocational: Work experience for all Year 11, and available for Year 12 linguists in Europe. Careers guidance advisors, seminars, psychometric testing etc.
Special provision: Dyslexia unit.
Languages: French, Latin, German and Welsh offered at GCSE, AS and A-level. Regular trips to France and Germany.
ICT: Taught both as a discrete subject and across the curriculum, eg research using internet, word processing and DTP to produce coursework. 180 computers for pupil use (9 hours a day), all networked and with e-mail and internet access. ECDL course for those not taking ICT at GCSE.

The arts

Music: Over 50% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. 23 musical groups including 4 choirs, madrigal, 3 large orchestras, many chamber groups, including jazz, pop and classical groups. 2 pupils member of the Welsh National Youth Opera. Large proportion of girls involved in music at county level, some at national.
Drama & dance: Both offered. LAMDA exams may be taken. Majority of pupils are involved in school and house/other productions.
Art & design: Design, pottery, textiles, photography, print making, art history, sculpture, graphics also offered.

Sport & activities

Sport: Options include gymnastics, dance, hockey, football, lacrosse, netball, tennis, cricket, swimming, rounders, athletics, basketball, badminton, volleyball, cross-country, fencing, lifesaving, aerobics, aquarobics. RLSS exams may be taken. National representatives at eg sailing, tennis, swimming, hockey, fencing, gymnastics, lacrosse; county representatives at netball, hockey, tennis, swimming.
Activities: Pupils take bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Community service compulsory for sixth form. Up to 20 clubs, eg BAYS, classics, drama, astronomy, debating, various sports and public speaking. Also Young Enterprise Scheme, Engineering Project, Achievers International, CEWE (Council for Education in World Citizenship), World Challenge.

School life

Uniform: School uniform worn except in the sixth form.
Houses & prefects: House system, both pastoral and competitive and including school eisteddfodau. Prefects (each with specific responsibilities), head girl and deputies.
Social: Meals self-service. No tobacco or alcohol allowed. Second-hand uniform shop.

Discipline
Relatively minor disciplinary matters dealt with either by the relevant member of staff or Head of Section. Strong anti-bullying policy, all girls sign an anti-bullying contract.
