What it’s like
Founded in 1545 to educate able Coventry boys, girls were first admitted in 1975 and the school is now fully co-educational. It moved to an urban site of 11 acres in 1885, minutes from the railway station, so pupils now come from the surrounding towns of Warwick, Balsall Common, Leamington, Kenilworth and Nuneaton. The buildings are an imposing example of Victorian collegiate Tudor, to which have been added a science building, a well equipped sixth-form centre, a new art complex, drama studio, sports hall and library. The junior school has its own building on the same site. Although a Christian school, pupils of other faiths are welcomed. Its first priority is unashamedly the achievement of academic excellence and this is reflected in very good examination results. Pupils have every opportunity to develop their potential through numerous extra-curricular activities including a variety of sports played at county, regional and national levels; music, drama, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, public speaking and debating. Its principal aims are to provide pupils with success, enjoyment and responsibility.

Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Age range 7–18, 1122 day pupils (580 boys, 542 girls). Senior department 11–18; 866 pupils (420 boys, 446 girls).
Entrance: Main entry ages 7, 8, 11, 12, 13 and 16. Own entrance exam at 11. For sixth-form entry, excellent academic potential (usually GCSE grade A in sixth-form subjects). 40% of senior intake from state schools (plus 15% of new sixth formers); 44% from own junior school (enquiries to the Headmaster's Secretary, King Henry VIII Junior School, same address).

Scholarships, bursaries & extras Junior school scholarships (value 10% of fees); Year 7 scholarships for maths, English, music, art, general achievement (value 10%–17%); sixth form academic, sport and music (value 25%–50%). Parents not expected to buy textbooks.

Headmaster: G Fisher, appointed in 2000. Educated at Bradford Grammar School and Oxford University (physics). Previously Head of The Crypt School, Gloucester.
Teaching staff: 67 full time, 15 part time. Average age 40.

Exam results
GCSE: In 2003, 105 pupils in Year 11, 99% gained at least grade C in 5+ subjects – average in 9.5 subjects, with GCSE score of 62 (61 over 5 years).
A-levels: 97 in upper sixth. Average passed in 4+ subjects with final point score of 390.

University & college entrance Over 90% of sixth-form leavers go on to degree courses (13% after a gap year), 10% to Oxbridge. 13% take courses in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science, 32% in science & engineering, 11% in law, 23% in humanities & social sciences, 18% in economics and business, 3% in languages. Others typically go straight into employment.

Curriculum GCSE, AS and A-levels. 21 GCSE subjects, 26 at AS/A-level.
Sixth form: Most sixth formers take 5 subjects at AS-level (usually a wide range), 3+ at A-level. 35% take science A-levels; 21% arts/humanities; 43% both. Key skills and critical thinking taken by all.
Vocational: Work experience available in sixth form.
Languages: French, German, Spanish, Latin and Greek offered at GCSE and A-level. Regular visits/exchanges (France and Germany).
ICT: Short course GCSE taken by all. 225 computers for pupil use (8_ hours a day), all networked and with e-mail and internet access.

The arts
Music: Up to 25% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. Many musical groups including orchestras, choirs, ensembles.
Drama: Drama offered; A-level drama and theatre studies may be taken. Many pupils involved in school and house/other productions. Recent productions include As You Like It, My Fair Lady, The Critic, Iolanthe, Macbeth.
Art & design: On average, 25 take GCSE, 10 A-level. Painting and drawing, graphic design, printing, 3D design and sculpture, mixed media and surface decoration offered. Regular entrants to art foundation courses.

Sport & activities
Sport: Rugby, cricket compulsory for boys; hockey, netball, tennis, rounders for girls; also athletics, cross-country, PE, dance, health-related fitness. Other options, especially in sixth form. County, regional and national successes most years, particularly in rugby, cricket, athletics, hockey and netball.
Activities: Pupils take bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (approx 60 start each year). Community service optional as part of DoE. Over 30 clubs eg Amnesty, chess, IT, Christian Union, maths, drama, bridge, sports clubs.

School life
Uniform: School uniform worn; dress code in sixth form.
Houses & prefects: Competitive houses. Head boy, head girl, prefects, head of house and house prefects, appointed by sixth form and staff.
Religion: Christian foundation; non-denominational assemblies.
Social: Foreign language exchanges. All pupils spend at least one week at school house in Normandy. Pupils allowed to bring own bike to school, sixth formers can bring cars. Meals self-service. School shop on neighbouring site. No tobacco or alcohol allowed.

Discipline Aims to promote self-discipline and self-esteem. Elements of trust and respect for all in the school community are strong and seldom abused.
