What it’s like
The school is part of the foundation originally provided by Thomas Burton who,
in 1495, endowed a chantry connected to a grammar school for boys. The
foundation was extended to girls in 1849. The girls’ upper school moved to its
present site in 1879, where there are spacious and very pleasant grounds on the
edge of the town. There have been many modern additions to the late-Victorian
buildings and facilities are now excellent. Religious instruction is
non-denominational but the school has a Christian basis and all pupils are
expected to attend RS lessons and assembly. The aim is to provide an academic
education of the traditional grammar school type in a disciplined atmosphere of
steady work. Standards are high and examination results very good. The school is
very strong in music, drama and art. There are also high standards in sports and
games (there are always representatives at county and international level). A
full range of extra-curricular activities is offered. There is a strong
commitment to local community schemes and a good record in the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
